Privacy and cookie policy
What this site collects, what Google AdSense collects, and what you can do about either. The text you paste into a counter is in neither category.
Last updated 28 July 2026
This policy explains what CountEvery collects, what our advertising and hosting partners collect, and what you can do about either. It is written to be read rather than to be legally impressive. If anything here is unclear, ask.
In this policy, “we”, “us” and “the site” mean countevery.com, which is owned and operated by Taurus Alternative Strategies, LLC of Rye Brook, New York, USA. For the purposes of UK and EU data protection law, Taurus Alternative Strategies, LLC is the data controller.
The short version
- The text you paste into a counter never leaves your browser. There is no server-side counting. Nothing you type is transmitted, stored or logged by us, and it is not visible to Google or to any other third party on the page.
- There are no accounts, so we hold no name, email address or password unless you send us one.
- Your browser remembers two small preferences on your own device. Neither is transmitted to us.
- Google AdSense serves the ads on this site and uses cookies. That is the main way data about you leaves this page.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google My Ad Center and optout.aboutads.info.
What the counters do with your text
All counting happens in JavaScript, in your browser, on the page you already have open. When you type or paste into a counter, the text is held in the page's memory, measured, and discarded when you close the tab. It is not sent to us, because there is nowhere for it to be sent — the site is a set of static files with no application server and no database behind it.
You can verify this. Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the network tab, and type into the counter: no requests are made. Or load the page, disconnect from the internet, and keep using it.
The same applies to the drag-and-drop file feature. A .txt or .md
file dropped onto the counter is read locally by your browser and never uploaded.
What is stored on your device
The site uses your browser's local storage for two things:
- A flag recording that you dismissed the cookie notice, so it does not reappear on every page.
- Your choice of how the letter Y should be classified, so the counter behaves consistently between visits.
Neither is transmitted to us. Clearing your browser's site data deletes both, with no effect beyond the notice reappearing and the Y setting returning to its default.
If you contact us
If you use the contact form or email us, we receive your name, email address and message, and keep them for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry and to keep a record of any correction it prompted. The form is processed by our hosting provider, Netlify. We do not add you to any mailing list and we do not pass your address to anyone.
Advertising, and the third parties on this page
Google AdSense
This site displays advertising served by Google. The disclosures below are the ones Google requires of every AdSense publisher, and they describe real behaviour rather than boilerplate:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google My Ad Center. Alternatively, you can opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info.
- Third-party vendors and ad networks other than Google may also serve advertising on this site and use their own cookies to do so.
- Google's own account of how it uses data from sites that use its services is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Opting out of personalised advertising does not remove the ads. It makes them less relevant to you, and the site is still funded by them.
Google Fonts
Typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser makes a request to Google's servers and your IP address is visible to them as part of that request.
Hosting
The site is hosted by Netlify, which serves the files and may log technical data such as IP address, timestamp and user agent for security and operational purposes, in the ordinary way that any web server does.
Cookies and similar technologies
| Set by | Purpose | Type |
|---|---|---|
| This site | Remembering that you dismissed the cookie notice; remembering your Y setting | Local storage, not a cookie. Stays on your device. |
| Google AdSense and partners | Serving and measuring advertising, frequency capping, fraud prevention, and personalisation where permitted | Third-party cookies and similar identifiers |
| Netlify | Security, load balancing and abuse prevention | Operational |
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking third-party cookies will not stop any counter working, because no counter depends on one. It may affect which ads you see.
Visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland
Where required, advertising cookies are set only after you have given consent through the consent message displayed on the site. You can change or withdraw that choice at any time by clearing this site's cookies and reloading the page, which will cause the consent message to appear again.
Legal bases for processing
- Providing the counters — performance of the service you have requested, and our legitimate interest in operating a website you asked to use.
- Server logs and abuse prevention — our legitimate interest in keeping the site available and secure.
- Advertising cookies — your consent, where consent is required.
- Replying to your message — our legitimate interest in answering correspondence you have sent us.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict processing, to data portability, and to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority.
In practice, because there are no accounts and nothing you type is recorded, we usually hold nothing about you at all beyond any email correspondence. To ask about or delete that correspondence, or to exercise any of these rights, write to hello@countevery.com and we will respond within one month.
California residents
We do not sell personal information, and we do not receive money in exchange for personal information. However, the use of advertising cookies by third parties may be treated as “sharing” for cross-context behavioural advertising under the California Consumer Privacy Act. You can limit it using Google My Ad Center, by enabling a Global Privacy Control signal in your browser, or by blocking third-party cookies. California residents may also request disclosure or deletion of personal information by emailing the address above.
Children
This site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The counters are used by teachers and by students, which is one reason they require no account and store nothing. If you believe a child has sent us personal information through the contact form, tell us and we will delete it.
How long data is kept
- Text you paste into a counter: never received, so never retained.
- Server logs: retained by our host for a short operational period.
- Contact correspondence: kept while relevant, then deleted on request.
- Third-party advertising data: governed by those companies' own policies, linked above.
International transfers
Our hosting and advertising providers operate globally, so data they collect may be processed outside your country, including in the United States. Those providers rely on their own safeguards for such transfers, described in their privacy policies.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, the date at the top will change and the new version will be posted here. Continued use of the site after that constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
