Terms of use

Use the counters for anything, including commercial work. Here is the short list of what we ask in return and what we do not promise.

Last updated 28 July 2026

These terms govern your use of countevery.com. By using the site you agree to them. They are short because the site is simple: it is a free tool that measures text in your browser, and there is not much that can go wrong between us.

Who you are agreeing with

The site is operated by Taurus Alternative Strategies, LLC, of Rye Brook, New York, USA. In these terms “we” and “us” mean that company, and “you” means whoever is using the site.

What you may do

Use the counters as much as you like, for anything you like, including commercial work. There is no account, no licence fee, no usage cap and no attribution requirement. You may:

  • Count text you wrote, text you were given, or text you are being paid to edit.
  • Use the numbers the site produces in reports, invoices, coursework or submissions.
  • Use the site in a classroom, and tell your students to use it.
  • Link to any page here without asking.

The counts themselves are facts about your text. We claim nothing over them and nothing over your text, which we never receive in the first place.

What you may not do

  • Scrape, mirror or republish the site's written content — the guides, the counting rules and the reference tables — as your own. Quoting a paragraph with a link back is fine and welcome.
  • Present the site or its output as your own product, or embed it in a way that implies we endorse or built your service.
  • Use automated tools to load pages at a rate that degrades the site for other people.
  • Attempt to interfere with the site's operation or security, or to use it to distribute malware.

Intellectual property

The text of the guides, the design, the code and the CountEvery name belong to us. The counting methods do not: how to decide whether a hyphenated compound is one word is not something anyone owns, which is precisely why we published ours in full on the How we count page rather than keeping it as a trade secret.

Accuracy, and the limits of it

We work hard to make the counters correct and we correct them when they are not. But you should understand what the numbers are before you rely on them:

  • Counts follow our published rules, which are one reasonable set among several. Another tool applying different rules to the same text is not necessarily wrong, and neither are we.
  • Syllable counts, reading time, speaking time and readability scores are estimates. They are labelled as estimates on the page and should be treated as such.
  • Where a limit is enforced by someone else's system — a university submission portal, a job application form, a publishing platform — that system's count is the one that decides. Ours is advisory.

The site is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted or error-free.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, data, goodwill or opportunity, arising out of your use of or inability to use the site — including a submission rejected for length, a missed deadline, or a document that turned out to be a different length than you expected. Our total liability for any claim relating to the site is limited to the greater of ten US dollars or the amount you have paid us, which is normally nothing.

Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Advertising

The site carries advertising served by Google and its partners. We do not control which specific ads are shown and we do not endorse the products in them. If an ad on this site is misleading, offensive or broken, please tell us — we can report it, and we would rather know. How advertising cookies work here is set out in the privacy policy.

Third-party links

The guides link out to style guides, research papers, platform documentation and other reference material. Those sites are not under our control, and a link is not an endorsement of everything on the other end of it.

Availability and changes

The site is free, and we may change, suspend or discontinue any part of it at any time without notice. We may also update these terms; the date at the top will change when we do, and continuing to use the site afterwards means you accept the revised version.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict of law rules. Any dispute arising from them will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Westchester County, New York, and you consent to the jurisdiction of those courts. If you are a consumer resident in the EU or UK, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory consumer law of your country of residence.
