Length
Word count targets, from a haiku to a thesis
What length is expected for about sixty kinds of writing — with the reason behind each convention and how much slack it actually has.
Almost every length convention exists for a reason, and the reason is usually about the reader's time rather than the writer's thoroughness. Here are the numbers that come up most often, with the reasoning attached, because a target you understand is one you can sensibly break.
Academic writing
| Piece | Typical length | How firm |
|---|---|---|
| Abstract | 150–250 words | Hard, set by the journal |
| Conference abstract | 250–500 | Hard |
| Undergraduate essay | 1,500–3,000 | ±10% typical |
| Extended essay / dissertation chapter | 4,000–8,000 | ±10% |
| Master's dissertation | 15,000–25,000 | Firm |
| PhD thesis (humanities) | 70,000–100,000 | Hard upper limit |
| PhD thesis (sciences) | 40,000–80,000 | Hard upper limit |
| Journal article | 4,000–8,000 | Hard, set by the journal |
| Literature review | 2,000–8,000 | Context-dependent |
| Research proposal | 1,000–2,500 | Firm |
The recurring question is what counts. Bibliographies are almost always excluded. Footnotes are usually included in the humanities and usually excluded in the sciences. Appendices, tables and figure captions vary. Do not guess — the difference between including and excluding 400 footnotes is the difference between a pass and a penalty, and the answer is in the handbook.
Applications
| Piece | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Common App personal statement | 650 words max | Enforced by the field |
| Common App supplemental | 150–400 | Varies by school |
| UCAS personal statement | 4,000 chars / 47 lines | Characters, not words |
| Cover letter | 250–400 | One page |
| CV / résumé | 400–800 | One page early career, two later |
| Statement of purpose (grad) | 500–1,000 | Check each programme |
| Grant application narrative | 1,000–5,000 | Hard, by funder |
| Scholarship essay | 500–1,000 | Firm |
Publishing and fiction
| Form | Word count |
|---|---|
| Haiku | ~10–17 (syllable-counted, not word-counted) |
| Flash fiction | under 1,000 |
| Short story | 1,500–7,500 |
| Novelette | 7,500–17,500 |
| Novella | 17,500–40,000 |
| Middle grade novel | 25,000–55,000 |
| Young adult novel | 55,000–80,000 |
| Adult literary / commercial novel | 80,000–100,000 |
| Epic fantasy or sci-fi | 100,000–150,000 |
| Picture book | 500–1,000 |
| Non-fiction book | 50,000–80,000 |
| Query letter | 250–350 |
| Novel synopsis | 500–1,000 |
The Hugo and Nebula award categories are where the short-fiction boundaries above come from, which is why they are unusually precise for a literary convention. They also explain why a 17,600-word story is a hard sell: it is too long for most short fiction markets and too short for most novella markets.
Business and the web
| Piece | Length | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Executive summary | 250–500 | One page, read standing up |
| Press release | 300–500 | One page |
| Blog post | 600–2,000 | Depends entirely on the question |
| Pillar / reference page | 2,000–5,000 | Breadth, not padding |
| Product description | 150–300 | Scanned, not read |
| Email newsletter | 500–1,000 | Two to four minutes |
| Marketing email | 50–200 | One action |
| Case study | 500–1,500 | Problem, action, result |
| White paper | 2,500–5,000 | Read by a specialist |
| Meeting agenda | under 200 | Nobody reads more |
How much slack a target really has
Three categories, and confusing them is where people get hurt:
- Enforced caps. A form field that rejects at 651 words. No slack at all, and their counting rules are the ones that apply.
- Marked limits. An assignment where going over costs marks. The common convention is ten per cent either way, but it is a convention and some departments do not follow it.
- Editorial guidance. “Around 1,500 words.” Nobody is counting. What matters is whether the piece feels the right size, which is a judgement about structure rather than length.
If you are near a cap of the first kind, paste your text into the word counter to get a stable figure while drafting, then paste into the real field before you commit — the two will not always agree, and theirs is the one that counts.
Common questions
How long should a blog post be?
Long enough to answer the question and no longer. In practice most posts that perform well run 1,000 to 2,000 words, but that is a correlation with thoroughness rather than a cause. A 600-word post that answers the question completely beats a padded 2,000-word one.
How many words is a college essay?
The Common App personal statement is capped at 650 words and the field enforces it. Supplemental essays are usually 150 to 400. UK personal statements are governed by characters instead: 4,000 characters and 47 lines through UCAS.
How long is a novel?
Most adult literary and commercial fiction lands between 80,000 and 100,000 words. Under 60,000 is generally a novella; over 120,000 is a hard sell for a debut, though established authors write much longer.
How many words should a cover letter be?
250 to 400, on one page. Recruiters spend well under a minute on it, and the main failure mode is restating the CV rather than being too short.
Is there a minimum word count for SEO?
No. Google has said repeatedly that word count is not a ranking factor. Longer pages correlate with better rankings because thorough answers tend to be longer, not because length is rewarded.
How strictly are word limits enforced?
It varies enormously. Application forms with a character field are absolute. Academic assignments commonly allow ten per cent either way, but that is a convention, not a rule — check your handbook rather than assuming.
